There are many things growing under the blazing Tuscan sky: grapes, olives, jealousy and outright panic...

This is the first in the An Eccentric in Lucca series of novels, which are set against the sunny, relaxed landscape of Tuscany.

In the book, we meet the Contessa Penelope di Capezzani-Batelli, long-time widow of Il Conte Giacomo, and doyenne of Luccan Society. We also meet the current members of the Contessa's Chamber Opera Group of Lucca - COGOL - each of whom possesses both a beautiful singing voice and a skeleton in the closet.

Gregorio Marinetti, owner of Lucca's prestigious antique shop in the Via Fillungo, has a financial problem.  His predicament is very serious and in desperation he tries his hand at gambling - which is something about which he knows absolutely nothing. He finds his situation continues to go from bad to worse and, for the first time in his life, he does something about which he comes to harbour serious doubts.  It wouldn't be so bad if he had somebody waiting for him back at home...

The Group's principal mezzo-soprano - who has a chronic aversion to oranges - descends even deeper into her phobia.  The principal soprano is having an affair with one of the tenors, which is as passionate as any in grand opera. A hen-pecked husband contemplates the removal of the cause of his frustration. Then there is the newest member: the young, highly-desirable English rose, who teaches at the language school.  And all of this before the first concert of the current season !
